Asda has become the first retail pharmacy in the UK to make salbutamol inhalers available without a prescription under a private patient group direction. Pharmacists across all of its stores will, from tomorrow (24 July 2012), be able to provide the inhalers to patients under a private PGD at a cost of £7 for two inhalers — undercutting the prescription fee in England by 65p. The service is intended to be used in emergencies and is not being offered as a routine alternative to a GP appointment for management of asthma, Asda superintendent John Evans said. "[This] message will be reinforced by the pharmacist who will explain how important it is for [patients] to manage their condition and that the service does not replace their contact with their GP," he explained. Patients will only be allowed to have two inhalers within an eight week period. If they attempt to purchase a third inhaler they will be referred to their GP, he added. Asda will audit the service to ensure that patients are not abusing the system although Mr Evans admitted that patients could get around the eight week limit by buying inhalers from different Asda pharmacies. Decided to try this service today - wasn't successful. Apart from the 25 minute wait to see the pharmacist the lady on the desk said she'd have to ask the pharmacist if she was able to do it anyway, when i enquired why there was some doubt she said they had a locum pharmacist in and didn't know if she was accredited. Apparently they've rolled the scheme out without getting all the pharmacists trained and accredited *sigh* what a useful system!!! Inflammation and constriction of the airways cause them to get narrower, making it harder for air to pass through. This causes a typical asthma attack which left untreated can be potentially fatal. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, tightness around the chest and shortness of breath. Currently, there is no cure for asthma, but there are a wide range of treatments that can help. Last year my doctor prescribed me with Prednisolone to treat my rheumatoid arthritis. Both my knees are badly affected by the disease and it is a real suffering for me to move sometimes, after a long period without movement I can not easily get up and walk. I have to rub my knees, get used to the pain, and wait for the pain to fade away. It takes me about an hour to get out of my bedroom as I have to do many exercises before I stand up and can make first steps. The disease has been torturing me for more than seven years in general. I have tried many different medications - pills, ointments and injections. The effect is either none at all or just minor and temporary. With Prednisolone life got much easier and less painful for me indeed.
