I just recently started having anxiety/panic attacks again and they are severe. My doctor put me on Xanax thinking this would be short lived anxiety. I have only been taking it as needed but it only helps for a short period of time. I don't want to get dependent on Xanax but I also want to stop having the attacks. I was on Klonopin for years and stopped taking it about 2 years ago. Thinking of going back to that instead of the Xanax. I go back to work tomorrow (off three weeks for surgery)and am afraid the Xanax won't last long enough to get me through the day. Hello there, The usual starting Xanax dosage is 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg taken three times a day or as needed. I tried to go back a week ago but had severe panic attack! If you take more than 4 mg per day, you are at risk of extreme physical or mental dependence. You may also experience more severe withdrawal symptoms (including seizures) if you stop taking Xanax or if you lower the dose. Depending on the severity of the anxiety disorder suffered by a patient, the Xanax dosage required to help treat them can vary from 1mg all the way up to 10mgs daily. Xanax can also be used to help treat people suffering from panic disorders and their dosages are typically increased, compared to people suffering from anxiety disorders. In order for the medication to have maximum effect, the required dosages must be customized to each patient's needs as each patient will react differently to the medication. When first prescribed with Xanax, patients will usually begin on roughly 0.25 mg to 0.5mg a day which should be taken three times a day. Doctors will need to closely monitor their patient's reactions to the medication at that level to determine if they are in need of a higher dosage. For people suffering from anxiety disorders, the amount of medication taken will be steadily increased over time according to the patient's reaction to the medication, as well as the severity of the anxiety disorder. Every couple of days the Xanax dosage will be increased by about 0.25 to 0.5mg and then tested for several following days. From my understanding, 1.5 mg per day is around the amount that is considered the “daily minimum therapeutic dose” for most people (and this is essentially how much I take. This is from memory, but I believe that my psychiatrist told me that 6mg per day is the upper part of the “therapeutic dose” range. Everybody is different, so 3mg doses might just put you in the middle of the range, honestly. I don’t believe that someone should start out cold that high, though. In my case, I take the extended release (ER or XR) Xanax, as it keeps the medicine more stable in your system, and in the end (again, at least for me) means that the amount that I have to take daily is actually lower, by using this approach. When I first started on benzos, I was prescribed Lorazepam, 0.5mg, and could take from 1–4 per day. I personally chose to try and get by with the smallest amount possible, and was taking 2–4 pills per day, depending on circumstances. )I know this wasn’t part of your question, per se, but I like to throw this in whenever talking to people about benzos. Since moving to ER, my dose is almost always 1.5 mg per day (0.5 in the morning, 1.0 in the evening). There is a product called Kavinace by Neuro Science that produces a very similar effect on neurochemistry as benzos, but they use specialized amino acids to do the job. I take Lorazepam only as needed, and I rarely have to do that. I’m not an expert, but my understanding is that it still has the effect of altering brain chemistry, and can be addictive (for some) just like the medicines. The generic name for Xanax is alprazolam, and it’s a potent benzodiazepine drug used to treat panic disorders, anxiety disorders, as well as anxiety that is as a result of depression. The psychoactive ingredient in Xanax is alprazolam, and this ingredient affects the way the central nervous system works. Being in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, it slows down a person’s central nervous system. This drug acts on a person’s nervous system to increase the production as well as effects of a nerve-calming agent known as GABA. It is the effects on the central nervous system which create the positive mood and some other effects associated with euphoria that people who abuse Xanax seek to explore. Although the drug is very effective in helping people who suffer from disorders like panic disorders and anxiety disorders, it is likely that people may abuse it. Xanax abuse is a big concern and everyone who takes this drug is at risk of overdosing, but the risk of overdose is more in people who abuse it. The dosage individuals should have is about 0.5mg to 4mg, but people who abuse it will most likely build up tolerance and take more than the recommended dosage.
